For some of us, shoes are simply a necessity. For most of us, we have a few pairs that can get us through most occasions. However, there are a select few individuals for whom shoes are an obsession. These individuals usually have so many pairs of shoes that the idea of finally organizing them is both exciting and frightening at the same time.
If this sounds like you, don’t worry. We’re going to show you some creative ways to store your shoes in style.
Bedroom Nooks
This shoe storage idea is perfect if your shoe collection is ever-increasing while your available closet space is on the decline. Creating a wall nook (like the one pictured) will allow you to significantly increase your shoe storage capacity without losing precious space in the dresser’s drawers or the closets.
Nooks like these can be created by cutting out sections of the drywall between the studs (or 2 x 4’s) that serve as the support for the wall. How much additional space you’ll need ultimately depends upon whether or not your shoe collection is fit for a hobbyist or if it is fit for royalty.
If you’re concerned that potential buyers may not appreciate your addition to the wall (should you decide to sell the home in the future), don’t be. You can always convert the nook to shelving for books, photos and other memorabilia later.
Use a Cabinet for Discretion
If you love your shoe collection, but have no desire to look at them all everyday, then you may want to consider this option.
Take traditional media cabinets and use them to store your shoes as opposed to traditional consoles or DVDs. This option is great for bedrooms that have small closets. By utilizing available space alongside the walls, these cabinet units can discreetly store shoes. Your guests will only see a beautifully-designed space with great furniture. They will never know about the obsession hidden within.
If space allows, storing these cabinets in your closet can be part of an effort to create a high-end closet design that is beautiful and functional.
Proudly on Display
Perhaps discretion isn’t your thing. Or maybe you spent a pretty penny on some high-end designer shoes and want to see them as often as possible (even when you’re not wearing them).
If this is what you feel it would take to get your money’s worth, then maybe you should consider prominently displaying your shoes. Just look at it as choosing to display your shoes instead of accent furniture.
Display options include installing shelving (designed to complement the room) and storing them in back-lit cabinets like the ones pictured here. As much as high-end designer shoes can cost, it only makes sense to select a worthy display.
Handle the Sandals
This shoe storage idea is a practical solution to an all-too common problem. For those who have them, it comes as no surprise that sandals, flip-flops and flats can be a hassle. It seems that they end up scattered on the floor in the closet over time.
This solution actually puts the unsightly metal wire hangers to good use. By manipulating the hanger into a way that it creates 2 hooks, you can actually hang flats and sandals as you would any other item of clothing. Not only is this easier to see and sort through the shoes, but it can also be a source of relief on your back because you won’t have to do as much bending over.

As you can see, you don’t have to have a closet overflowing with shoe boxes. They can take forever to sort through as you struggle to remember which box is hiding which pair.
