The term commode comes from the French word for “convenient”. Let’s face it, when you consider the purpose of the the word’s modern meaning, convenient is a great way to describe it.

A commode is a chest of drawers that is traditionally wider than it is tall and consists. originally, they were constructed in a convex shape that was flat in the back so it could rest flush against the wall.

The transfer of the meaning of commode from the chest of drawers to the toilet after what is known as night commodes came into play. Night commodes were usually round chests of drawers that were stored right next to the bed.

The purpose of the night commode was to store basins, pitchers and chamber pots for people to clean themselves. The transition from drawers to waste-removal device was a natural one.
