Following yesterday’s post on some general guidelines, today’s post will list some ways in which to discover some specific style elements and how to get the most from each room.

Taking a little bit of time to find your personal style will be extremely beneficial when the time comes to outfit your home. Browse interior design magazines and web sites to familiarize yourself with industry terms styles.

Bringing photos and lists along with your floor plan sketches will not only save time, but will help the sales agent to find exactly what you’re looking for.

After doing this initial research, define a room’s style in writing. Laying out these details will streamline the search for the perfect elements.

Ask for help if it makes you nervous, but aim to mix patterns like stripes, geometrics, large-scale and small-scale checks when coordinating a room.

The importance of this next tip can not be overstated. Consider the function of the room before purchasing furniture. If a room is to serve dual purposes, there needs to be space for the furnishings of both.

Keep unifying elements like motifs, flooring, trim color or wood tone in mind in order to cohesively tie all of the items in the room together.

Armed with all of these tips and a little planning ahead, there will be no room in your home you can’t successfully decorate.
