California King: Defined

Bel-Air BedThings ‘out West’ always seem to be done a bit different than everywhere else. That’s not to say it’s any better or any worse. It’s just different.

Well, this applies to mattress sizes as well.

A California king-sized mattress differs from a standard (or Eastern) king size mattress in that they are four inches narrower and four inches longer.

While, four inches may not seem like much, it makes all the difference for those taller than average.

This doesn’t mean that all California King mattresses are in the western half of the U.S. Whether stories of visiting royalty or the result of the evolution of other mattress styles, the origins of the name are slightly arguable, depending upon who you ask. However, it’s not all that important.

What is important, is to keep in mind that different dimensions of mattresses will require a unique bed frame. Sheets can also present a problem. Flat sheets for a standard king size mattress will usually fit a California king. Fitted sheets, on the other hand, will need to be specifically made for the California king size mattress.

Size and transport of the California king can also bring up some issues. In smaller bedrooms, or ones with unconventional layouts, the California king size mattress can throw off the flow of the design. It can also be difficult, and sometimes impossible, to maneuver the longer mattress in tight apartment hallways, doorways and other compact spaces.

Be sure to consider all options, angles and expenses before deciding which mattress size is the one for you.
