One of the greatest things about decorating and interior design is that accents and primary furnishings can truly come from anywhere.
Discount furniture stores, mega warehouses, branded retail outlets, online retailers, auctions and antique shops can all be sources of great furniture.
Today, however, we’re going to focus on flea markets. Although the general opinion of flea markets is that they’re full of useless junk, one man’s trash is truly another man’s treasure.
Flea markets are no different than any other establishment in that some offer quality wares and some do offer junk.
Unlike antique shops though, flea markets aren’t for finding items that are unknowingly worth a ton of cash. Flea markets are for finding items that are worth everything to your particular space or need.
When shopping flea markets, thrift stores and the like, it is important to exercise creativity. Many items found there can be taken and used for alternative purposes.
For example:
- Old porch posts make for a great four-poster bed with an aged look
- Weathered doors can be transformed into great coffee tables. (If wary of your items coming in contact with the surface of the table, find a piece of glass that matches the dimension of the door. This will clean the piece up a bit while still allowing the piece’s details to show through.)
So, the next time you’re heading to a flea market looking for a unique item, think outside of the box and imagine all of the possibilities.
