How to Paint Any Surface – Part 4

Soho Mirror by Global Furniture

Knowing how to effectively paint a number of surfaces will not only prevent headaches in the form of having to redo the project all over again, but it will also allow you to customize your furniture to fit your home and tastes.

The previous 3 installments of the series covered how to paint ceilings, ceramics, bricks (as well as the fireplace surround), metal and doors.

They can be found here: How to Paint Any Surface, How to Paint Any Surface – Part 2 and How to Paint Any Surface – Part 3.

Here’s some tips on painting some more surfaces:

Glass

It is so important that the glass be clean and dry before painting. If a pattern is being used, tape it to the inside of the glass (frame).

Going for the stained-glass look? Apply a thin layer of glass paint along the pattern with an artist’s brush. Apply an additional coat after the first is dry for an opaque finish.

Be sure to paint slowly to avoid bubbles. Seal your design with a glass-paint varnish. Use a varnish with a matte finish for a frosted-glass look.

Fabric

Using pre-shrunk fabric, tape it to plastic-treated cardboard that has been wrapped in a pillow case (in the event the paint soaks through). Apply fabric paint in several thin coats so it can soak into the fibers of the fabric. If required, heat set the paint. The fabric can typically be laundered after 12-14 days.
