Follow the rules. Go by the book. Adhere to the guidelines. We’ve grown up with an understanding that it is important to obey the laws that govern us. And it is important to do so.
Well, what about those times when you want to color outside the lines? Rules were meant to be broken right?
Design rules are no exception. Some are more definite while others leave room for flexibility.
A common, and equally boring, design rule is that perpendicular lines made with furniture lined up along a wall is key.
Take the Phoenix Platform Bedroom Set by Coaster as an example. It disproves the line of thinking that a bed’s headboard (and other furniture) needs to sit flush against a wall.
Use you furniture to create uncommon lines and angles. Simple techniques such as these have a subtle way of really invigorating the space and keeping it from having that plain, almost sterile feel.
Some rules worth adhering to include identifying the room’s focal point (such as a fireplace, a wardrobe, a bed or even a view) before determining how you want to decorate.
Other rules capable of ignoring include designing a room around a large, central piece of furniture. This is nonsense. Sure, the layout should be dictated by your largest pieces of furniture. However, inspiration can come from anywhere and anything (no matter the size).
The moral of the story here is that no arbitrary rule should completely dictate the way you decorate, furnish and arrange your home.
Let them serve as simple guidelines for reference, but you ultimately have to live in the space. So make sure it’s outfitted just the way you like it.
