Accent Mirrors – Cheval

Mission Black Cheval Mirror by Powell

In continuing with our series on using accent mirrors to enhance a space, this post is going to highlight the style and benefits of a cheval mirror.

See Accent Mirrors-Wall for tips on incorporating wall mirrors into your home.

A cheval mirror is a tall mirror that is suspended among two posts that are joined by horizontal bars. Also known as a psyche or horse dressing glass, the cheval mirror was introduced around the end of the 18th century.

The horizontal bars allow the mirror to be tilted to the appropriate angle. The cheval mirror served as a dressing mirror, which makes it a perfect fit for bedrooms, bathrooms and closets/dressing rooms.

The Mission Black Cheval Mirror by Powell is constructed of solid oak and an oak veneer frame. The design is true to Mission style (for more on Mission period designs, see ‘On a Mission‘).

The adjustable nature of the mirror makes it suitable for individuals of any height while the lightly distressed finish will immediately add character to the room.

While originally Victorian in nature, cheval mirrors are available in a range of period styles and design schemes. The one thing that has remained consistent about the piece is its flexibility and function.
