If something is ‘dove-tailed’, it means that multiple pieces of material were joined by creating a series of inter-locking wedges (also known as pins and tails). Although it is almost exclusively seen in wood-work, it is also used in some steel and other metal applications.
The pins and tails must fit without gaps in order to create a secure fit. When done properly, furniture can be constructed without excess screws, nails and brackets.
Containers, furniture and buildings (yes, buildings) have been constructed using dove-tail joints.
Handmade furniture that boasts solid dove-tail joints often fetches a much higher price, as it is a dying art. Machine-cut or hand-made, rest assured that furniture constructed with dove-tail joints will withstand the test of time (and children).
