Have you recently been in the market for antique furniture pieces, but are hindered by a lack of reputable dealers or auctions nearby?

That pretty much leaves you with two options: dial down your desire for antiques or turn to the internet.

While shopping online has become simpler, safer and more transparent over the years, there are still appropriate measures that need to be taken when attempting to purchase antiques online.

Navigating the waters of shopping for antiques can be daunting face-to-face, not to mention online. this isn’t to discourage you; just to make you more aware.

If you’re going to pursue shopping for antiques online, keep the following in mind:

  • You’re going to want to get as up close and personal to the item as you would in a real setting. Ask the seller if you can see close-up pictures of the furniture from a number of angles.
  • Ask for detailed information on how the item will be packaged and shipped, along with the costs involved.
  • Consider getting someone to “hold the money”. An online escrow service would help ensure the money is not withdrawn from the seller until you are satisfied with your purchase. While not fool-proof, it is extremely helpful in the prevention of scams and frauds.
  • See if the item can be sent to you on an approval basis. This will allow you and other experts, should you so choose, to look the piece over. As with everything in these types of negotiations, get it in writing.
