Spring is now into full-swing and while we all may have looked forward to milder temperatures, few of us probably looked forward to the season’s other guarantee: Spring cleaning.
Not to worry, however, we’re going to provide some tips, guides and to-dos to help refresh your home.
Let’s get right to it.
Washing Windows
Regularly cleaning windows throughout the year is great, but they could use a good washing once-in-a-while. Make your own solution with 1 pint of rubbing alcohol, 1/2 cup of sudsy ammonia, 1 teaspoon of dish-washing liquid and 1 gallon of water.
Quick tip: Wash windows on a cloudy day. Cleaning solutions will dry too quickly and result in streaks if it’s too shiny.
Under Appliances & Furniture
Dust bunnies, cob webs, bugs and all sorts of other “treasures” can accumulate under appliances and furniture over time. Ask a friend to help move the larger pieces if you can’t move them on your own. Sweep, mop or dust as necessary. In some cases, appliances can be moved out far enough that a vacuum hose can reach the space.
Cleaning Window Treatments
Drapes and curtains subtly accumulate dust over time, but usually aren’t soiled enough to lavender. If there is a stain, however, address it according to the material and always test cleaning solutions in an inconspicuous location.
To remove dust, simply use the extended-arm upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Toss sheer curtains in the dryer on low heat with a fabric-softener sheet to remove dust from them.
Safety Checks
This regular cleaning session is an ideal time to test and replace the batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Also, test the levels on the fire extinguisher. Before an emergency is a good time to purchase a fire extinguisher if you don’t already own one. Store it in the kitchen.
