Changing the color of walls is the quickest way to change a room’s design with maximum impact. Although painting a room is simpler, applying wallpaper can instantly add depth through patterns and textures.
The opportunity to completely transform a room within a matter of hours is rather tempting and, if done correctly, is absolutely worth the time and money invested.
1. Lay out the room. Center the wallpaper on the ‘focal wall’ (or the wall people first notice when they walk into the room).
2. Prep the paper. For paper that is pre-pasted, roll a strip of the paper up with the adhesive side out and dip it in a tray of water (the temperature varies with each manufacturer) just until the paper is wet thoroughly. Book the paper for 3 to 4 minutes.
3. Hang the first strip. Unfold the booked strip at the wall and apply the top half. Overlap the ceiling by 1-inch. Unfold and smooth the bottom half of the strip to the wall, overlapping the baseboard as needed.
4. Trim strip at ceiling. Use a sharp razor parallel to the wall to trim the top of the strip. Use a wide putty knife as a guide to prevent tearing the strip.
5. Trim around windows and doors. Use the same technique for trimming the ceiling to remove the overlap on windows and doors.
If it’s the first time papering a wall, consult with a professional at a home improvement or paint store for details and room-specific advice.
